Schutzhund is a German word meaning "protection dog". The sport of Schutzhund is now more accurately referred to as Utility Dog & the test is called IPO (International Pruefungsordnung). The international umbrella organization for all things dog related, the FCI, sets all the rules for IPO. Schutzhund was developed in the early 1900s in Germany as a temperament test to prove breed worthiness of the German Shepherd Dog and since has evolved into a sport. Training in the sport also develops and evaluates those traits in dogs that make them more useful and happier companions to their owners.
